Fibromyalgia/Myofascial Pain

Fibromyalgia is a condition in which a person experiences widespread pain musculoskeletal pain or myofascial pain.  Often this condition can be accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbance, mood changes, migraines, paresthesias (tingling/numbness sensation) and exercise intolerance.  Diagnosis criteria include evaluation for tender points in 11 out of 18 areas of the body including:
  • Arms (elbows)

  • Buttocks

  • Chest

  • Knees

  • Lower back

  • Neck

  • Rib cage

  • Shoulders

  • Thighs

Medical tests may be required to rule out other conditions.

Patients with fibromylagia or myofascial pain often have long musculoskeletal problems that enhance their symptoms.  Joint malalignments along with muscle and fascial trigger points are typically found in many areas causing the the body to adopt abnormal movement patterns therefor require more energy and difficulty with performing exercise.  These joint dysfunctions and trigger points must be addressed in order for those muscles to function properly.  Once treated, the patient should notice decreased effort with movement, less pain and improvement in energy because the body is not having to work as hard.
